I’ve felt a bit more hopeful in the past few weeks since Vice President Kamala Harris became the presumptive Democratic nominee for the Presidency. Hopeful enough to want to do some magick to uplift her campaign and support her in my own way (you know, in addition to donating to her campaign). Plus, I’ve been wanting to crochet an intricate flower square pattern for a while… and “Kamala” in Sanskrit means “lotus.” Well, now that’s just irresistible.
I chose the Blooming Lotus Square pattern from Sisters in Stitch and bought enough Rainbow 8/6 cotton yarn from Hobbii.com to make one square before committing to a full blanket.
The pattern has a tutorial video, which I found essential, since some of the rows attach to more than one previous row and there are some other complexities to the pattern that I just needed to see in progress.
After finishing the first square, which ended up at 14”, I decided to make a 12-square lap blanket. Six of the squares will feature the light and dark purple yarn as show above. The other six will feature light and bright pink yarn. The yellow, green, and almond colors will be consistent throughout.
So, here’s where the magick comes in — as I work up these lotus squares and put them together into a lap blanket, I am using the flow space that I enter when I create, the repetitive movement of the stitches, and the tension and friction that knots it all together to envision a world where VP Harris wins the November election and is inaugurated in January. I am also praying to Kamalatmika, she who dwells in the lotus, a Tantric characterization of Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of prosperity. I found this mantra for her on YouTube, but since I haven’t mastered it yet, I am not using it for this project… yet.
I’m sharing this because I would love it if others joined in and made their own lotuses for Kamala! If you do, please share with me a picture of at least one of your squares.
Blessings from a strong and open heart,
